The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek is a 2019 historical fiction novel by Kim Michele Richardson, inspired by the real-life Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project and the blue-skinned Fugate family of Appalachia. It follows Cussy Mary Carter, a blue-skinned woman who becomes a packhorse librarian in 1930s Kentucky, delivering books to isolated communities while facing prejudice and hardship during the Great Depression. The novel explores themes of identity, courage, community, and the power of literature against a backdrop of poverty and discrimination.
